Last night didn’t go any better than the first night. I went in 30 minutes late because I had to pick up my sister’s dog from boarding. I had talked to HR earlier in the day and they said it was OK to come in late.

HR lady also said that I was supposed to have taken my three tests on my first night and since I didn’t, I would have to take them on my second night. She was a little annoyed with me for not taking them. EXCUSE ME? I reminded her that nobody knew what to do with me and there was NOBODY in the office when I arrived and that I didn’t have an employee number. She apologized.

After showing up, I realized nobody would have noticed if I didn’t show up at all. Nobody was in the office again. I did have my employee number on the board though, so I clocked in… or rather had to guess how to clock in since nobody was there to show me.

I went to find a manager and told them that I needed to take my tests. Lucky me, nobody knew which tests I was supposed to take. So the closing manager just put me on a computer and guessed at two tests and said she’d figure out from someone else what the third was.

I took the two tests and then went to find her and she was yapping on what sounded like a half personal, half business call… for an enternity. I stood around being obvious for a while, but she made it more obvious that she didn’t care, so I went and sat back in the computer room by myself.

I heard her get off the phone, so I went to talk to her and saw the back of her head as she was exiting the office. Yep. Abandoned. So I decided that it was no longer my problem and I went to find my trainer.

I found him just as he was going to break, so I took break too. He had no idea that he was even supposed to be training me! I called Kristi and told her all of this and was so annoyed that I was ready to just walk out and quit. What kind of business operates like this? I could have just wandered the floor all night, on the clock, and nobody would have known. I could have left, gone home and hung out until closing, then walked by in to clock out. PATHETIC.

I decided to finish out my night. After break I went to work with my trainer and basically spent the night straightening aisles and putting away abandoned merchandise. As clean as my Target is, and it’s WAY WAY WAY cleaner than any of the other ones in town (because it’s ALWAYS empty) it was still really dirty. I was shocked. As a casual shopper I would never have noticed, but once I was digging in each aisle I saw all kinds of things. People need to learn to put stuff back where they found it! And they also need to learn to throw trash away, not bury it behind merchandise.

By the end of the night I had cooled off. I think I’m going to stay. The aisle straightening is relaxing and doesn’t require any thought. I could go wait tables, like Kristi suggested, but that’s a lot of work, and exhausting. It’s more money, but it’s harder work.

I may have to call HR this week and tell them to revise my schedule. I don’t know if I can do all these hours they gave me. It really doesn’t leave me any time to buy food, do laundry, do personal errands, or anything. I’m literally going to work at 7:30am (I go in early to avoid traffic) and then getting home at 11:15ish, with no break in between. Then only time I have off is a small part of my Saturdays and Sundays, which I’m sure will be spent trying to catch up on sleep.

Hopefully tonight will go much better. Paco has been ragging on me, saying, “Now you know how I feel.” Or actually he says, “Now you understand me.” But I know what he means to say. Yes, he works two jobs, but he only works 3 hours at the first one and then 8 at the next. I’m working 8 and then 5. Ok, not a big difference, but he doesn’t work every day! He totals, MAYBE, 50 hours a week. I worked 50 hours nearly every week at 3M, and now I’m working 67 hours this week and 71 next week. That IS a big difference.

Something to say?
