Last night was my first day at Target and it didn’t start off as well as I would have expected. A manager was supposed to meet me in the office to show me how to clock in and set me up on the computer. My employee number was supposed to be on the “FYI” board in the office.
Nobody was in the office when I arrived and there was no employee number. Nobody knew who was supposed to be training me. FUN TIMES. I knew I was supposed to be on registers, so that’s where they put me.
I expected to get trained on the registers, but instead was given (what looked like to me) a quick start guide to cash registers and told to learn it myself. Ok, no big deal, I’m smart, I can figure it out.
After 35 or so minutes of that I was told to shadow a cashier. Or as it turned out, stand next to one and be ignored. After 10 minutes of that, I was put on a register by myself, totally unsupervised, to ring up customers. OK?
The manager/lead/whatever put me on the express lane. Express? It’s my first night and I’m supposed to be EXPRESS? I hate the express lane register because there is not room for anything and the scan gun cord blocks the bags so everything is always tangled.
Plus the Express lane is the furthest away. So no matter how few things people had, they still went to the other registers and ignored me. Most of the time I was staring off into space, being bored.
The register times you on each transaction and scores you with a percentage. The goal is 88%. You really have to move to get that kind of a score when it’s your first time registering and you are ALONE… but I did it. In fact, I maintained a 94%.
So he moved me on up to the first full sized register, and then I was busy. I was enjoying cashiering. It’s a lot of fun. If it weren’t for the sore feet, I’d rather be working the registers than on the floor.
Tonight I’m supposed to be at work at 6, but I have to call them and tell them that I can’t make it until 7 because I have to pick up my sister’s dog from the boarding place. I totally forgot about that when they made my schedule. Pity.
I hope tonight starts off much better.
