I left work yesterday and went to do grocery shopping. First I had to go home and change shoes. I swear Pumas are the most uncomfortable shoes ever made, but they sure are cute. I spent over an hour grocery shopping. How did that happen? I bought a ton of food though. I’m sick of eating out, and that’s odd because I never get sick of eating out.
Afterward, I met up with Eric and Lance at Carrabas for dinner. We got there right as the old people rush was ending. It kind of felt like we were at Luby’s for a while there. Old people pushing walkers kept trying to squeeze by.
We had plans to go to a Haunted House after dinner. Eric freely admitted he was a screamer and easily scared. I don’t scare too easy, but being startled isn’t really being scared it is? I guess that’s why I don’t like Haunted Houses. They aren’t ever scary, they just had people jump out at you and startle you. They pack you into a little maze, turn off the lights, and then hide people. DUMB.
Ok, but it ended up being fun because Eric screamed like a girl every time someone jumped out. Lance went first, Eric was behind him (holding on for life) and I was last. Being last sucks because those idiots like to try to sneak up behind you. I’m not a fan of the sneak up behind. I also didn’t like when they would follow us after jumping out and scaring Eric.
I think the house could have been set up much better. Having people pop out from around corners isn’t very original. If I had done it, I would have had hidden doors in the walls. I would have a spot that would appear to be a dead end and have someone come out of a wall behind you as you reach it, so you felt trapped, then have an escape door open after you’ve been thoroughly traumatized.
I’d also have people drop from the rafters above, which would be so unexpected. I wouldn’t have the stupid scary music, because silence is often more scary. I’d have people hidden behind walls, and when people would walk by they could poke through holes in the wall with those floaty pool tube things painted black. That would freak people out to be touched by something, and yet you wouldn’t have to worry about your staff getting hurt. Plus they wouldn’t be seen, so it’d be even creepier.
I’d definitely have a lot of dead ends with doors you’d have to find to escape. I think making a scary haunted house is more about praying on people’s insecurities and phobias, not so much startling them. I’d have one room pitch black and silent, where you have to feel around for the exit, with gross slimy things on the walls and people poking you with tubes through holes in the walls; that would be awesome and scary.
I didn’t get scared once in this lame haunted house, but I did laugh A LOT, so I guess it was fun. It sure wasn’t worth $13 though. It would have been a lot more fun to go with more people, and mostly girls.
I’m so glad today is Friday. I want to go home from here and take a long nap. I’m exhausted.
