I see that the pledge of allegiance might be heading towards the Supreme Court again. I’m glad. I hope it gets struck down as unconstitutional. I’m not atheist, but I don’t believe we should force children to recite a pledge including the words “under God”.
What’s funny if that I always read about how people (in favor of the pledge) say it’s not a prayer, and the words “under God” aren’t that big of a deal. Well, if it’s not a big deal, then just remove the phrase and restore the pledge back to the way it was originally written. We should NEVER have put the words “under God” into the pledge in the first place. That violated the constitution by combining church and state.
The article I read on CNN put it best:
“Imagine every morning if the teachers had the children stand up, place their hands over their hearts, and say, ‘We are one nation that denies God exists,”‘ Newdow said in an interview with AP Radio after the ruling.
“I think that everybody would not be sitting here saying, ‘Oh, what harm is that.’ They’d be furious. And that’s exactly what goes on against atheists. And it shouldn’t.”
And that’s because, like always, Christians want THEIR agenda served and they don’t care about the rights of everyone else. It’s only fair when it’s THEIR way. It’s not just violating atheists, it’s violating other religions as well.
Religion, in my opinion, is the main problem with this world today. If people could worship freely in their own way and not always be trying to convert everyone else to their own religions, then there wouldn’t be so much hate and intolerance. This country was founded by people trying to escape religous persecution and that is why the founding fathers specifically wrote into the constitution to keep church and state seperate. Now, fundamentalist are constantly trying to inject more religion into the constitution, the courts, the schools, and everywhere else they can… and what happens… the country becomes more and more divided, more hate and intolerance is bred, and society degrades.
SHAMEFUL. Keep your religion to yourself.
